Fox Corp is buying Roku in a cash-and-stock deal valued at about $22 billion in a bet that pairing its sports and news programming with a top TV streaming platform will strengthen its position as audiences shift online.

The deal, announced on Monday, gives the cable TV-reliant Fox direct access to Roku’s large installed base of more than 100 million ‌streaming households, helping it better sell targeted ads and reduce reliance on traditional distribution.

Fox will acquire Roku for $160 per share, representing a premium of 11.4% to Roku’s last close. Shares of Fox were ‌down 8% in premarket trade, while Roku’s shares were halted.

Roku is one of the first companies to bring streaming platforms like Netflix and YouTube to television through connected devices and smart TVs.

We're headed back to the times when there were only 3 broadcasting companies. The problem is that all the owners are fascists.

It had that digital tuner for over the air reception.

Guess I'll stick with what I can catch on internet.

Have they figured out a way to force us to buy their streaming yet?

I believe the price was about 90..but, being a nice model, we can get stations 70-80 miles...

I canceled cable, got a Tablo so we could record tv shows, and upgraded from the Roku stick to Roku Ultra (Tablo won't work on the stick), and now we only pay $60 a month for tv. I love it more than Spectrum's tv. There are so many great apps on Roku.

One thing, you may have to get an external HD for the Tablo as the space included on the Tablo is limited.

We also have Roku but I prefer the NVidia for some reason. We’ve had them both for a few years now. IIRC, we had to switch to NVidia when we signed up for a specific streaming service which we don’t have anymore. The streaming service itself turned out to be very very unreliable. But, the device works fine with all the others that we have. {Amazon Prime, Netflix, NordVPN, and Apple, and the free ones like Tubi, etc}. I can’t speak for other streaming services like Hulu, Paramount, Max, Disney+. We don’t have them, either because we aren’t interested in the subject matter, or because of the company’s fascist business practices.

Like Roku, NVidia is only a one time device purchase, with no monthly fee.

I prefer the NVidia , the interface is slightly different and I find it makes more sense. Or maybe it’s how our old smart TV reacts with it. But, in any case, if you want to walk away from Roku, try NVidia.

Call me paranoid but I stuff little pieces of cotton from a qtip into those little holes then a small piece of duct tape on top. I bought a new TV last spring, let it run 24/7 for 6 months until the warranty was out (used like new). Then I popped it open and disconnected the little microphone inside. Guess what, I found a second one. My cell phone goes into the microwave when I'm home. I'll take it out to check it every now and then. It sets nearby when I go to bed. Am I paranoid? Yes lol.

we discovered with them, since they were our first streaming devices, we could use them on non-smart TVs as long as there was a port to plug them into. Of course, we only discovered that after we had replaced one TV. LOL.
