Iranian negotiators suspend talks with US in protest over Trump threats

Iranian negotiators have suspended high-stakes talks with the US in Switzerland in protest at a stream of threats issued by Trump to bomb Iran, and even to kidnap the Iranian negotiating team unless the strait of Hormuz is reopened.

It was not clear if the Iran walkout was permanent or a symbolic show of protest. But before leaving the face-to-face talks in Burgenstock, Iran reached a draft agreement over how the US will issue a waiver lifting sanctions on Iranian oil exports, one of the key preconditions before Iran will open talks on its nuclear file.

Iranian officials claimed the waivers would be issued soon, adding progress had also been made on unfreezing Iranian assets in overseas bank accounts. Iran and the US last week signed a memorandum of understanding designed to lift the blockade on the strait of Hormuz, leading to 60 days of talks on Iran’s civil nuclear programme.

Trump’s stream of aggressive threats on social media and in TV interviews filtered across the Atlantic to the negotiating site, causing anger among the Iranian negotiating team, who said they represented an unacceptable threat to their personal safety. They pointed out the memorandum signed by Trump last week included a non-aggression pact. Trump’s threats contrasted with the tone adopted by his vice-president, JD Vance, who said he had been asked by the president to use the talks to turn over a new leaf with Iran.

Vance must realize the leader is stark raving mad after these threats. He really needs to begin imposition of the 25th before we're all blown up.

the incompetent stooges he sent to negotiate an end to a war he started came to the table with nothing and the Iranians knew it…and they also knew, given Trump’s cognitive decline and negative press, he would threaten annihilation in exchange for capitulation..no surprise the Iranians walked out, leaving the three idiot “negotiators” with bupkis, not even a handshake…it’s obvious his minders cannot or will not muzzle him..I’m assuming this is why he was whisked off to Camp David, far away from reporters..it might have worked if they had taken away his phone and laptop…

No thought whatsoever as to what comes out. As you say: pathologically incapable."

I teach public speaking and in such courses I used to tell students that Clinton was the first president who didn't read a speech. He did read them, but he would often interject his own thoughts here and there throughout the speech. This drove his speech writers crazy! I cannot, however, think of a time when Clinton's off the cuff interjections caused any serious problems for the U.S. If any posters can, please speak up.

My point, however, is that traditionally presidential speeches are read and from which the president rarely deviates. There is an important reason for this, and what you see trump doing is exactly why presidents are dissuaded from speaking extemporaneously.

And while some politicians have the self discipline to write well thought out, measured posts, trump - the angry pathological liar and self centered sod that he is - spews without any thought to what the effect might be.

Social media is a form of communication that is beneath the office of the presidency.

Remember how Kamala Harris held out for an interview on television when she was running? She made them compete. Smart, classy move.

As long as the US thinks it is operating from some imaginary and self proclaimed moral, religious and military superiority.

There's a little matter of the US taking out the Iranian Supreme Leader with extreme prejudice that hasn't been discussed yet.

And the need for the US to control Israeli aggression in the area.
