US political figures from left and right voiced fresh objections on Sunday to Donald Trumps provisional deal with Iran even as the US president made new threats while Vice-President JD Vance hailed progress during the first round of direct peace talks in Switzerland.
Negotiations in Lucerne between the US and Iran have already run into difficulties, after Trump wrote on Truth Social that Iran must immediately stop their highly paid PROXIES in Lebanon from causing trouble. If they dont, well hit Iran very hard again, just like we did last week, only harder!!!
Irans negotiators were reported by Irans state news agency IRNA to have walked out of the building where the peace talks are being held. The delegation of the Islamic Republic of Iran, after meeting with the Qatari delegation as one of the mediating parties, left the building where the negotiations were being held, IRNA said. At the same time as the talks began in Switzerland, Donald Trump published a message on X in which he repeated his threats and remarks against Iran, it added.
In the US, bipartisan criticism of the US-Iran memorandum of understanding (MOU) continued on Sunday. Senator John Cornyn, a Texas Republican who recently lost his primary battle for re-election, posted a line on X from a Wall Street Journal article on how rogue regimes evade US economic warfare. It said: Irans ability to withstand sanctions so far exposes a hard fact for Washington: economic pressure has largely failed to cow rogue regimes, as they game out more ways to sidestep US restrictions.
