(39,116 posts)I didn't know any real-world girls or women who were interested in radios and computers, and none who'd listen to me ramble on about telephone networks.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nyota_Uhura
I dreamed of flying away with her.
In college I did meet an engineer who was interested in radios and computers, and I did fly away with her, but that relationship ended in bloody catastrophe, mostly my blood smeared across a street in Berkeley after I jumped out of her moving car.
Some dreams don't turn out as we expect them to.
debm55

(39,116 posts)I followed her when she was accepted to graduate school in another state and we've been together since.
I'm still a computer and radio nerd, but I changed my major from Engineering to Biology after my second year of college. Biology fascinated me too. Engineering would have been the more lucrative course of study but then I wouldn't have met my wife!
My wife's not a computer or radio nerd, she's a more general math and science enthusiast. On the Star Trek Enterprise she'd be working with Spock and McCoy.

Had a map of the world on my bedroom wall with the Pacific Ocean highlighted.
Swore that I would wander there. Curiously, thats one of the few areas I have not explored.
Oops, title of the show was Adventures in Paradise. It was supposedly based on the Michener book, but so very loosely that is wasnt. It still had great video of sailing the South Pacific.

(8,079 posts)which probably shows how old i am. He was not a regular on any series so I had to chase hom around, and the characters he played were often not the nicest.
One Thanksgining with I was in the military far from home, I had the goo fortune to be invited to a family's dinner, and another guest happend to be a Broadway tech worker. Much of Weaver's work was on BRadway and I shy;y confessed my crush. She told me I had good taste - that IRL he was one of the nicest people one could ever hope to meet. One of my treasured moments.
I used to have (may still have - I still have a lot of vinyl) the original cast recording of "Sherlock Holmes" on Broadway in which he played Holmes. Conan Doyle, I suspect, would have hated it, but he didn't have a crush.

I just looked it up on Wkikpedia to check my mamory, and all the principals are now dead except the kid who played "Wiggins" (the head of the "Baker Street irregulars, a young boy.)
