(12,253 posts)We tried it out on our Barbies first by hanging them upside down. It worked and looked OK, so she said she wanted me to try. She hung her head over the side of her bed and I chopped away. Didn't quite look the same. It wasn't my idea so I didn't let her do mine. She spent a bit of time with our neighbor who was in hairdressing school to fix it up.

(5,761 posts)I would have had it collar length if she had let me have it the way I wanted it.
In the 90s my wife wanted me to grow it out enough to tie it into a ponytail and one night the older stepson came home with his head shaved and that's when I decided to grow it longer. I still have it in a ponytail, but the hairline is a little higher.

(18,045 posts)I can't believe I used to have it that long. Emulating my older rocker brother. It was uncomfortable and didn't look very good (because I put no effort in keeping it up). Not styled in any fashion just long.
I do have really good hair and only have a little gray even at 61. My mom, who had my type of hair, grayed suddenly around 70 so I guess I have that to look forward to. At least no balding for now (unlike my brother's monkey a__ on the back of his head (his words - not mine)).

...up my forehead. I cringe when I look at elementary school pictures of myself.
By junior high, I had some say in the matter. Ever since, my bangs must be touching my eyebrows or I feel shorn.

(12,253 posts)Or it could have been when I used Sun In on my dark brown hair. It makes pretty highlights on blond hair, but turns brown hair to orange.

(121,633 posts)a good idea because my hair was (and still is) fine and unmanageable and I resisted getting it braided or otherwise messed with. So I had to get the pixie cut, absolutely hated it, cried and carried on, was mortified to have to go to school. I didn't look like a boy; I looked like a homely little girl with glasses and ears that stuck out. It seemed like it took forever for that disaster to grow out.

(23,069 posts)a short order cook in the college cafeteria and would end my shift needing to wash the grease out of my hair. So I went from shoulder length hair to a shag. My hair is thick and curly. It was such a mistake.
Growing it out was horrendous and I vowed never to cut it short again. So my hair length in the past 50 years has alternated from below the shoulders to waist length. Its in between that now.

She never did it again.
Sounds like you just managed to lighten your locks to the orange stage. It needed serious toning. Most home streaks looked similar.

(70,784 posts)I had it for the "rock star" look in an 80s band.
It was unpopular with the EVPs of the company.

(70,784 posts)Then Prince, then Michael, and other R&B stars.
Mine wasn't as tight, as I'm not black & it was long-ish.
In that last band, the look was Italian suits, so I cut it shorter (making the VPs happy), combed straight back.
I still wear it that way today, except I've got a 10" ponytail in back. That would have annoyed the VPs, too. But, I retired first!

(70,784 posts)The 80-85 gigs a year started bumping against an incessant travel schedule for my job.
I was 51 & it was getting to be too much. We were together 20 years, so it wasn't like we pulled the plug too soon.
The guys and I still hosted some jam nights after we wrapped it up, though.
I've done a few solo acoustic gigs & sat in on keys with a band who are pals of mine.
But, nothing regular.
I play for my own enjoyment & to continue to get better.
I have a list of songs I need to record, which I may do this winter. I haven't recorded in 2 or 3 years, so I'm due.

I sported a 80's half pomp lob but with bangs for a brief time (think a slight punk style)
The rest of the 80's my bangs were teased sky high and the sides of my hair were teased it looked like I had wings and was about ready to fly away. Lots of teased hair volume, lots of hairspray. Bad hair day? Tease it some more and add more hairspray, make it higher ...it's fine

(68,701 posts)After Star Wars was released in 1977, every guy my age (nine) in the neighborhood wanted to look like Luke Skywalker. So we grew our hair out in the classic 1970s disco shag. My career military officer father complained, but didnt force me to cut it.
Now that Im almost completely bald, I wear my bald-fringe Marine-short.

(21,131 posts)I have fine hair and I went to get a perm.
They left the crap in my hair too long and it came out sticking straight up and all frizzy!
I was so upset!
The "stylist" saw my expression and asked me what did I think.
I was speechless and then she asked me if I ever did acid.
I replied, "No I have not but after this mess maybe I should!".
Another big failure was the "box" haircut. Very short and popular in the early 1960s. It was a plain short haircut and made your hair look like a box, hence the name. Ugh.

(51,645 posts)Sure. Why not? I'll try nearly anything in the "unusual appearance" department - after all, how the hell are you supposed to be "unique" if you do the same shit as everyone else? I draw the line at using safety pins as earrings...how do you get them in without hurting yourself?
So I go in at 11 am with my very dark brown hair that's already fourteen different colors and sit through many hours of lifting the other colors out of it and putting this blue glop on my now-white hair.
We take the foils out of it and...uhh...Val...is this SUPPOSED to have come out black? I looked like Joan Jett, it was that black. She'd been coloring hair thirty years before that day and never had anyone's hair go that far out in left field before.
The only thing we could do with it was put a "punk rock chick" - her words, not mine - shaggy pixie cut into it. If you've got a look going, best to take it all the way. It did wind up looking really cool at the end of it all, but it sure wasn't what we were going for.
