My mother used to feed it to us for budgetary reasons, and it always gagged me. To this day I can't even stand the smell. I also won't eat octopus, but that's because they're intelligent creatures.

More of the Greek food from my mom's side, some more from Ukrainian (my dad), Italian, waaay more Chinese, Middle Eastern, India (Northern & Southern) Tex-Mex, some Japanese (+only veggie sushi). 👍
They were pretty patient about my pickings. Very glad I changed.

(22,836 posts)My mother made the best white beans!!! Hers had a kind of thick gravy instead of broth; we had them with cornbread and sometimes greens. I have yet to make mine like hers, but I can do them in the instant pot in a short time, so that's good.
I got so homesick for them when I lived in Massachusetts!!! I could not find the beans or the self rising cornmeal anywhere. My sister used to take them back to Connecticutt with her when she visited.
the baby lima beans cooked just tender with a nice white sauce can be very good. but it has to be the baby ones!

(39,082 posts)... that was a fairly common meal when I was a kid.
My mom's cooking followed after her grandmothers. I guess that's what you ate in the winter when you lived seventy miles from the nearest small town and the roads became impassible because of snow, ice, or mud.
I actually like the meal, served with a big chunk of bread, but it horrifies my wife who dislikes lima beans intensely and is a vegetarian.

Evert foodie restaurant in Richmond HAS to have them. I thought I could break the cycle with my daughter but weve taken her to these places and she likes them. I have failed.
Theres a treatment. Its basically saturating them in anything that doesnt make them taste or smell like sewer, or brussel sprouts. You could treat one of my leather shoes and it MIGHT not taste like a leather shoe.

Red caviar in sour cream. When your face is fixed for sweet, salted fish eggs is a hell of a shock. Never trying caviar of any kind again.

There's a special Greek Easter soup called magritza.
Sooo my favorite older cousin had us over for Greek Easter. Prepared a wonderful meal, except for...
...that soup!
😄 (I can laughter after about 55 yrs)
So there's those little organs floating about. Whimper. I can still see them!
But...I loved my cousin so, half choked them down.
Always hated fishy smelling fish. Another older cousin; the older sister of the previous cousin had a get together. One of the appetizers was a cracker with some mix of something I liked except I picked out the anchovy.
Did it occur to me that it might have left an odor bc of it's?oil...
...noooo?
Gak!
People say they're really salty. All I could taste was strong fish.

My idea of smoked fish came from growing up in northern Michigan where the fresh water fish was smoked to the point it was cooked so it was nice and flaky. Liver, yuck, and lima beans are just a mealy mess. Succotash just ruins the corn.

(535 posts)I'm probably weird, maybe definitely, but I can't really think of anything. I have very, very few dislikes despite being an obnoxiously picky kid. Sesame seeds on a hamburger? No way. Fried shrimp, good. Boiled shrimp, bad. No logic.
Of course I have my preferences. At a restaurant I wouldn't order chitlins if I could have a pulled pork sandwich instead.
As for liver, Lima beans, and sardines, I like them, but wouldn't want them all in a casserole.
