Upstate NY, pic below.
Heaviest snow I ever shoveled. Each shovel-full must have weighed 30 pounds. All water. Like trying to move lake water.
Then, when I was near the curb, some fucking asshole in a Honda Accord drove by me at 60 MPH (in a 30 MPH zone), 4 feet away from me, and soaked me to my underwear.
What is the matter with people?
Some woman made up for that guy buy driving about 5 MPH, pulling to the other side of the road, and smiling and waving. That's how it's done by normal people.
Well, another successful driveway shovel without a heart attack. I'll probably be in traction tomorrow though.
I was going to do my neighbor's, but I was too wet. I'll do her driveway tonight.
Had to strip naked in the garage because there was literally not a dry piece of clothing on me, and I had those snowball-like things sticking all over me, like a dog that rolled in the snow.

(19,227 posts)It must be someone who lives in my neighborhood. When I figure out who it is, I'm going to have a talk with him.
Fucking idiots.

(17,473 posts)Looks like the same back-breaking sh*t we get each winter near the bottom of our driveway.
My heart goes out to you, especially about that rude driver. I live in a very red area, and when people are nasty I sometimes think there's some telepathic way they can tell that I'm not a MAGA. It breeds senseless paranoia.

(36,063 posts)It's the kind of snow you get when it's just barely freezing, like maybe 30 or 31 degrees.
At first you don't want to move it or shovel it, and you're hoping it will melt right away.
But then it doesn't melt and you HAVE to shovel it. Because if you don't, it will be ice by tomorrow morning.
Sigh ....

(30,246 posts)we call it Sierra Cement. Wet slushy snow that freezes overnight. very hard to ski on or snowboard.

(6,691 posts)Quad bypass... I was told never to do crap like that anymore. My hubby knows it. Our roommate knows it. The next door neighbor, whose husband has also had one, knows it. They would all converge in a moment.
I suppose that is a good thing? Because, that used to be 'meh' amount of effort to myself. I was raised on a farm. I have shoveled enough crap with that consistency. (Pun intended. )

(10,928 posts)We call it hard rain. About 5-7 years ago it warmed up in January, got about that same amount in a storm. Tried to clear it didnt do a real good job got back to regular temps next day or two had to live with that shite until spring thaw.

(30,002 posts)is it warm enough for that?
there's so much wrong with people. don't get me started. But as I always say, people are the worst, and people are the best. Sounds like you got drenched by the first and cheered by the latter.
take it easy and don't overdo it. You can do it in shifts so you don't get a heart attack or end up in traction!

(7,160 posts)I agree, light fluffy snow is so much easier to deal with.
Sorry about the soaking, I've been on the receiving end of that stuff more than once.

(449 posts)Now imagine it piling up 300 to 600 inches over the course of the winter. After the '22-'23 season Caltrans couldn't open some of the high passes until July, they had to grind through it sometimes measuring their progress in feet not miles with heavy equipment.

(5,715 posts)I cut away enough with a pruning saw to get in and out once the snow melts a little. I've had a couple heart attacks and know what I can do and not do. I'll sit by the wood stove and sip rum and cokes. Oh, and my power was off until a short while ago. I expected to be out for at least a day. My rural spot is the first to lose power and last to get restored and the power is out quite often, at least once a month. More to come because this whole area is loaded with dying ash trees. Last year one took out my power pole and caused 6K damage to one of our cars. Life in the country.

If you have a hand whisk in the kitchen, you can use it to get the clumps of snow off.

(1,561 posts)Tried to create some clear longitudinal strips so the water could exit the snow (dway was on a slight incline) and go down the driveway reducing the weight of the snow that was left.
Nope! The water stubbornly stayed in the snow. Good ideas exit my head and die. Im sure the neighbors thought so.

(10,316 posts)I spent my formative years in northeast Iowa shoveling 6 inches of partly cloudy 3 times a week before trudging off to school. I was in my forties before I bought a snow blower. Now I deal with it by asking Cash or check?
And youre right. The heavy wet stuff is the worst kind of snow. Ice is even worse than that, but you cant shovel it, so at least when youre hearing the tree limbs snap you dont have a shovel in your hand.

(3,537 posts)It was thick and heavy like cement. You couldn't shovel it, you had to break it up to move it. It was gritty, too. Weirdest snow I've ever seen.
