Oklahoma @ Nebraska 23 November 1972. Thanksgiving.

I remember it well. I was at the Navy Recruit Training Command in San Diego. Weather was horrible for San Diego Standards. Rainy, wind, cold. To protect its assets the Navy had us humans inside most of the day listening to canned lectures saved for such occurrences. I do remember the one about always having a box of thank you cards in your sea bag. Great advice. The Company Commander stepped into his office for a minute and came back with a radio. He plugged it in and tuned in the subject football game. We gathered round and the smack talk started. It was the non Navy Highlight of my eight weeks. Oklahoma scored 10 points in the 4th qtr to win 17-14. 52 years ago today.

1. I remember it well. One of the several "Games of the Century" that happened in the late 60s, early 70s.

My brother was in his last year as an undergrad, and I was in my first. He and his wife of a year and a half were living in a trailer, and he cooked dinner. My mother and two sisters were also in attendance. I don’t remember dinner, but I recall the game. Johnny Rodgers had a long punt return, which probably sealed the Heisman Trophy for him.

Job of painting the picture. And we were a captive audience.

6 December 1969. Game of the Century. Texas at Arkansas. Rainy Day. Nixon in the stands. Wasn’t at the game but I was in Fayetteville. Hogs up 14-0 going into the 4th qtr. Texas won 15 to 14. My first taste of presidential security. He sky was full of helicopters.

And I believe Penn State had the opportunity to play Texas but chose the Orange Bowl where they beat Kansas 15-14, but Penn State was a heavy favorite.
