I just can't eat a lot of sweet things as part of the meal and then not revert to eating (craving) nothing but sweets. It is like a "turn-on switch."

Just kidding!

Parboil the sweet potatoes until almost tender. Cool, peel, cut into slices, or cube, as preferred. Put in buttered baking dish. Add butter, brown sugar, and bourbon to taste (the original recipe commented that a quarter cup of bourbon per person was about right). Cover, bake 350 fo 35-40 minutes. Serve.

One friend, when I introduced her to this recipe years ago, would, after removing from the oven, whip the entire contents like mashed potatoes. Either way is good!

Please let me know how yours turns out!

is a bit important, as the potatoes would never be fully cooked otherwise!

I will be looking forward to hearing how they turn out!

Especially if those sweet potatoes are the deep orange ones that have the consistency of custard when they're baked.

A vegan friend bakes hers with a mixture of maple syrup & nutritional yeast. I was adventurous one year & tried it & it's surprisingly delicious. Go figure.

Never thought of that. Then again, I never thought of bourbon either!

I come from New England, learning new ways to prepare squash and potatoes required relocating to other parts of the country!

Imagine my shock when I realized that people put marshmallows on top of the baked dish! My buddy with whom I make T-day dinner suggested it for this year to my absolute protest. I offered a few other ways and we agreed to simply baked them, yams, next to the turkey. He can cook if he has a clue about what he's making but, I've found, he needs to be taught how to make anything else. I do my best.

I mean, marshmallows with sweet potatoes? Why? Just why?

I guess we should never underestimate the power of the processed garbage companies to convince us to adulterate perfectly good items of nature's bounty with their junk.

which in this house is with butter, brown sugar, and yes, marshmallows. YUCK. and since the people in this house that like these obviously have no class or taste I just use canned. I tried making them from fresh sweet potatoes one year but nobody cared so I don't bother with it. I am sure they would like them with pecans, but pecans are expensive and are needed for pecan pie, not wasted on a nasty overly sweet side dish that I don't eat. LOL

I make a puree of sweet potatoes. Seasoned with cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice, and white pepper. Plus a cupful of vanilla extract.
I use heavy bream to create the puree so they're very rich.
I sprinkle toasted Panko over the top, but not mixed in.
