The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsI spent a few hours at the Atlanta Botanical Gardens
Yesterday. It was absolutely beautiful. The orchid room nearly blew my brains. The huge Christmas wreath and Christmas tree were breathtaking as were the fall colors .
We lucked out as the lights were turned on while we were there. When we returned I asked BIL to line up In A Monastery Garden and told him thanks.
We had already visited two museums and MLKs neighborhood and eternal flame. We also went to Mary Mac’s Tea Room . Saw Jimmy Carter’s photo but sadly also saw Gingrich’s😀
I head home tonight. There is something lovable about Atlanta. I head home tonight

(10,459 posts)the 1970s, I lived just around the corner and would eat there whenever I could scrounge up $5.00. Those little rolls they served were to die for, also the collard greens and cornbread.
Glad you got to see the botanical garden. It is beautiful, almost any time of year, but Christmastime is WOW! You're right, Atlanta is lovable!

(39,244 posts)When I was working for the paper, I had an event to cover at Longwood Gardens. I had to wait about 45 minutes for it to start and they let me go sit in the orchid room by myself. There must’ve been 75 different kinds of orchids in there it was just amazing. I never got tired of looking at them.

(25,942 posts)Here is an interesting tidbit about the Atlanta Botanical Gardens. My youngest brother and his friends used to frequent the outdoor concerts at the ABG, with front row seats the rule not the exception. One night, about a decade ago, one of the women in the group felt a sharp pain in her hand in the middle of the concert. She, like my brother and several others, was a physician.
They moved to a lighted area and determined that she had, most likely, been bitten by a venomous snake! They never saw the snake, but when they got to the ER at Grady Hospital it was obviously a snakebite .. most likely an Eastern copperhead (Agkistrodon contortrix). She was treated agressively and recovered fine.

(223 posts)Next time you visit take time to eat at Manuel's Tavern. This was the meeting place for many democratic functions since the 1960's. Jimmy Carter announced his run for governor there in 1970, and President Obama visited on one of his campaigns in the state. There are so many great pictures on the walls that it would take hours to walk around the different rooms to see them all.

(282,460 posts)Mary Mac’s originally opened with one dining room; today, we have 6 bustling dining rooms and a full service bar. The restaurant has expanded to 13,000 square feet, occupying several storefronts, and is one of the city’s five-largest restaurants. Though our restaurant has grown over the years, it’s still 1945 in the kitchen. We still do things the way Mary MacKenzie and her successor, renowned owner, Margaret Lupo (1962-1994), did things. Every morning, we shuck bushels of corn, hand wash our carefully selected greens, and snap fresh green beans by hand. We bake our own scrumptious breads and desserts, like old fashioned banana pudding, coconut cake, and fresh Georgia peach cobbler, and brew up the best sweet tea - “Table Wine of the South”.
