8. I still remember, back in the '70s

in the competition between Detroit area TV stations, there was an Ad aimed at Sonny. It opened with a rotund clown pointing at a weather map and laughing maniaically, uncontrollably. Then the voice-over came on saying that some stations treated the weather as though it were a joke, but we don't.

Must have been a pretty effective commercial for me to remember it clearly after 50 years or so.

11. Sonny Elliott was definitely a character

I don't remember the ad or competition you're talking about, but Sonny for sure made jokes and had a lot of fun giving weather reports. I think the actual weather reporting was sound, just his delivery was infused with entertainment and a lot of character. His weather map chalkboard with the big piece of chalk, and the way he would combine words together to describe the weather conditions were his trademarks that I remember so well. He was goofy and had fun with everything he did. He was a Detroit icon, I really liked him!

I remember he also had a weekly show called At the Zoo with Sonny Elliott where he would basically tour around and talk about the different exhibits at the Detroit zoo, and interact with the animals. I loved that show!
