Back in the late 50’s early 60’s they were willing to close off 2 blocks for us. Was a perfect hill.

NE Iowa.

I remember years ago when the daughter of King County Prosecutor Norm Maleng's daughter was killed doing that - she was sliding down a long icy hill on an undrivable road - and was killed by a car on a passable side street that wasn't looking for and didn't see kids zooming down the hill. It was very sad. So I always think of that.

had a wreck while sledding on a hill near us. All the roads were closed at the time. I don't know exactly what happened but she ended up in the hospital and had to have her spleen removed. What we heard later was that she had lost control and hit a parked car and then a tree.

It was a horrible thing. Now, the street she was on was a very steep grade and Seattle streets can turn into absolute ice rinks (you can't see the thin layer of ice beneath the snow) so she probably had a high rate of speed and no control.

The kids should have helmets on, and it would be nice if barricades were set up at each end of the street.

I think I was too focused on the kid heading toward the parked car!
The 2nd time, it was obvious that was a cop.

No helmets. No protection. No injuries. Secluded housing development, dirt roads. Early 1960s.

No way this could happen today. But DAMN, what fun that was.
