(3,254 posts)I loved all the characters but besides Rudolph himself (and that voice) I really liked Yukon Cornelias. Always throwing his snow pick into the air and tasting it after landing, "Nuthin"...

(2,483 posts)From wikipedia:
The original airing in 1964 did not include Santa traveling to the Island of Misfit Toys, but included a scene near the end of the special in which Yukon Cornelius discovers a peppermint mine near Santa's workshop. He can be seen throughout the special tossing his pickax into the air, sniffing, then licking the end that contacts the snow or ice. Deletion of the peppermint segment in 1965, to make room for Santa traveling to the Island of Misfit Toys, leaves the audience to assume that Cornelius was attempting to find either silver or gold by taste alone.
The 1965 broadcast also included a new duet between Rudolph and Hermey called "Fame and Fortune", which replaced a scene in which the same characters sang "We're a Couple of Misfits". Viewers of the 1964 special complained that Santa was not shown fulfilling his promise to the Misfit Toys to include them in his annual toy delivery. In reaction, a new scene for subsequent rebroadcasts was produced with Santa making his first stop at the Island to pick up the toys. This is the ending that has been shown on all telecasts and video releases ever since.
Also wikipedia says NBC will broadcast the special again on December 6, 2024 in a 75-minute telecast. The network will continue its policy of blocking all streaming of the special for 2024, while allowing pay-per-view option.
That was the Christmas special to watch (early 1970s).

(38,613 posts)Also, it's actually very sad and a little scary when Frosty melts near the end. Imagine what it would be like for the little girl named Karen who was locked in the greenhouse with him to watch him melt into a puddle right in front of her eyes.

(1,259 posts)The Grinch and Charlie Brown are close seconds.
And Ive noticed as an adult that a lot of the dialogue in Rudolph is actually very grown-up and hilarious. Santa complaining about the elves singing always cracks me up. And of course, Holly Jolly Christmas is worth waiting for.

(82 posts)these Christmas classics and so do my kids and grandkids. Rudolph, Charlie Brown, etc. were first aired when I was in high school. When I was younger, I remember tv shows such as Andy Griffith, Ozzie and Harriet, Lassie, Donna Reed had Christmas episodes. Sometime in the 80s, The Snowman (based on the Raymond Briggs picture book)was first aired. It does not have dialogue-the music is wonderful and we always choke up at the end. Two movies I have recently discovered that I really like are Love the Coopers and This is Christmas . Reading all these posts brings back so many good memories. Thanks everyone!

(68,670 posts)Ever since I can remember, I would tear up when the Grinchs heart grows three sizes at the end. Because that huge beaming smile is the look of someone who, for the first time in his life, is truly happy.
It was playing on the TV at the makeshift barracks where we were quartered during the loading and shipment phase of Desert Shield in December, 1990. I was afraid the guys would see me cry when that moment came. But I managed to control myself.
Ive never seen any of the other efforts to bring the story to the screen. And I never will. I dont understand the impulse to mess with perfection.
