SN daughter J lived for months with the sister C, after being abducted from our home and contact cut off, and then she was put into an apartment by herself that got too expensive, and then back with sister's family, but LIVING IN THE GARAGE WITH THE CHICKENS.
(incidentally for those who hadn't heard the earlier story -- I went to Adult Protective Services for help when the abduction happened but was told there was nothing they could do as she is an adult and no evidence that she did not want to go live with sister.)
I actually saw her several days ago after two years. Older daughter brought her for a short visit. She didn't say much -- older sister always monopolizes conversation. She was very quiet, and her affect is flat now.
I did learn something utterly shocking and heart-breaking. In the conversation between the two of them I learned that older sister is planning to commit J to a residential facility for people with disabilities. Middle of 2025. SN dtr is very high functioning, and has always resisted labeling. Always. This plan is counter to what her wishes always have been.
I immediately endeavored to find if Sis had obtained legal guardianship of J. and the answer seems to be no because she would have had to notify me of that process.
With a mad-man gaining the WH and Stephen Miller in charge of "cleansing the population" my fear arises that people identified as special needs will be in work camps, detention, or worse.
Good vibes appreciated.

(9,025 posts)Guardianship? Seems to me that "living in the garage with the chickens" calls for some sort of legal intervention.
It's pretty expensive in fees and also requires an attorney. $$

(3,294 posts)I wonder if an agency that deals with elder abuse could help with advice. It seems to me that your daughter's treatment is worth law enforcement investigation.
If law enforcement is involved and they find her sister has been neglectful and inhumane, the district attorney could file charges. In that scenario, you may be able to avoid having to hire a lawyer. A judge could award you with guardianship even though she is an adult by age if she has special needs.

(13,737 posts)I would like to improve the situation without law enforcement. I don't know that the living situation is inhumane -- I don't think the chickens are running around in the area that is her sleeping space. It is a detached garage and a little ways from the house, on a big property, which means in the winter, walking through weather and dark, even, to use the bathroom.
I want her to come home here. Very comfortable, with good neighbors and the ability to go to grocery store alone on public transportation, and be with family nearby.

(3,294 posts)Avian flu can transfer from wild birds to chickens very easily.
Predator mites of various species can also be a major problem. Those mites leave painful itching bites and are almost impossible to get rid of without very drastic internal and external medications. They have been bioengineered for crops in many cases, but have spread to humans in some cases. They are very resistant to pesticides and insecticides. Those bites could be seen though. So that flock may not have the infestation, but again exposure to wild birds could spread it to them. Some rats and mice also spread them.
Theres been a thriving business in the bioengineered predator mites for crops and other purposes, one can even buy them on Amazon. I have a friend who has been dealing with the problem for several years. She has tried all kinds of things, moved to two different hotels to self treat, before moving to a new apartment. She still has them though, theyve survived all her efforts to get rid of them.

(13,737 posts)If I recall, you are in the same state where J is now living with chickens.

(136,880 posts)My daughter lives nearby, and used to have chickens. They moved, no longer have a small farm, but are on the river near me, and they have a pup, who tried to eat someone's sock, so had 1.5 feet of intestine removed recently; resting and recovering now.
