A predator might ignore two shells but would be able to see the prey inside the cup.

My ex's mom was a lovely woman and he and I are still close. I'll go to her memorial when it happens, but traveling on short notice so close to the holidays is not possible.

But I think it’s the same type of octopus I saw on a show about them recently. A little one like that got too close to a mantis shrimp and the octopus used one of the shell halves as a shield.
