I am hopelessly bad at down-hill skiing, but I handled cross-country well More endurance than skill ..

(70,636 posts)I was a hired gun on piano for a band that used to play the balloon race festival in Danville, IL.
Went 2 years in a row & got 3 rides each year.
The one at night I wouldn't do again, but the other 5 were great.

month. Be careful if you drive, we always did. the traffic was very busy. And a lot of time we missed our turn off and had to circle DC to come back. Enjoy,

(36,430 posts)Stay at a hotel where you can walk to things, or one near a metro stop, so you can avoid driving.
Its a wonderful city, despite the coming second invasion of TFG.

(25,691 posts)The worst time to go is in the summer. The humidity is awful, and all summer long it is 95 degrees and 95% most of the time. You sweat just from standing still.

(18,739 posts)I love being on The National Mall.
Visit the Museums, Lincoln Memorial, etc.
They have had a tram that goes around The mall, and you can get on and off.
As far as weather I used to watch their weather reports and go when it was 80°F - 83°F, not more than 85°F and Low Humidity. This would happen at times.
Now maybe that's changed, and they don't get that more comfortable summer weather.
Was there once at chery blossom time. Glorious!

(121,513 posts)But at my age I can no longer afford to fall that hard. Parasailing would be fun. I've flown a glider and done aerobatics, but parasailing would be even more exposed and more exciting. However, being old somewhat limits me any more as to my adventures.

(106,806 posts)East Coast ski slopes are often far more narrow and icy. So, my first outings (with far more experienced skiers who sort of left me to get down a long icy run by myself) were a bit white-knuckled. I loved time in Maine, Vermont, and other ski areas near by, but it is a bit different terrain and experience.
Obviously, you will find very challenging runs out West as well, but typically they have wide beginner slopes with packed powder and the treelines really far off to the sides--very helpful before you progress to more technical skiing.

I've been lucky made 2 big trips on my own savings, and 2 later big trips were gifted to me.
Also made a bunch of shorter ones on my own.
Chicago has great architecture, food, interesting history. Geographical interest - having lived on an island (Manhattan) much of my life - It'd be different to be in a city by a very, big lake!
For countryside - how, I'd I'd to see the giant sequoias, but that's more of a pipe dream now.
I did see the Grand Canyon, and my cousin took me up into The Rockies west of Denver on a motorcycle!
Both amazing experiences!

(35,188 posts)TY SheltieLover! Austria was beautiful. I was there in the mid 80s. I always thought I could move to Vienna in a heartbeat except now they have a far right government there. Way to ruin a dream!
My trip there seems more unlikely as time goes on, as well. Hey if my sis and I ever make plans to go, well call you!

I've had a fulfilling life so there are no "if only I had done" things for me.
So, I'm sitting that part out.
But, I did want to agree with the poster that recommended the balloon ride.
Then, I wanted you to know how cool an idea I thought this was.

Preferably in a sports car of some sort, since my wife banned me from riding sport bikes when we got married lol. Might do a segment of it next year year for my 40th bday, LA to San Francisco and back over the course of week or so. Just need to plan our stops, where we are staying overnight, and what car to rent.
