(27,984 posts)Ginger was out of my preteen league and snooty to boot. I wanted Mary Ann to be the girl next door. Suffice to say, my best friend’s name was TV. I had lots of real friends too, but I seldom considered someone besties for more than a couple of months. Upon reflection, none of my elementary school age friends remained what I’d consider ‘close’ into high school - we were amiable, but they weren’t who I hung out with.

(11,726 posts)In California, it was Janet. Then we moved to Nebraska for a year, and it was Karen. Then It was Badger Village, WI, for about a year and I didn't really have a best friend. When we moved to Madison, my best friend in grade school was Heidi, but after grade school, even though we went to the same huge jr. high and high school, we never had another class together and moved in different circles. In jr. high, I mostly hung out with Julie and Christine, two very different girls. Then in the summer between my sophomore and junior years I met Sue, and we were besties from then on.

(27,644 posts)That was the most popular girl's name the year I was born. There were never fewer than at least 4 or 5 lindas in my classroom, many more in the class itself.
Linda, Linda, Linda.

(1,738 posts)She was my best friend until her parents moved to a nearby state.
Her mother was also my mother's best friend.
I remember one time, I saw a car coming down the road, and wishing Paige was in the car.
And, it was Paige!
(She was with her father)

(20,603 posts)Had several more friends, and was devastated when we moved only 10 blocks away, but to a 7 yr old child (during the summer deliberately between school years) - it was like miles & miles away! Never saw them again. Devastated!
Later, my dad found Bethy's family when I was a young teen, and we corresponded for a while.
Made new friends especially one who was thought to be quite cool by many, but I was her friend bc we were both quite smart, and liked each other's company as well.
And speakng of the time of year she and I wanted to do tmThe Times Sq Ball drop on NYE when we were adults 😄, but we lost touch.
But I was sort of often ostracized by what I considered the coolest group some were artistic like me, almost all were fashion fans as was I.
Once in JHS, and definitely HS had a whole group of new friends, and left those troubles behind.
