I've been watching what I suspected was a nest of Cottontail babies, waiting for them to emerge. Sure enough, about a week ago I spotted a baby hiding next to the foundation under a bush. It seemed okay and I noticed the mama bunny coming around a couple of times. Today, since I hadn't seen it around, I checked around the area and found the poor little thing had died. No apparent injuries. It's been really hot for the past few days, so maybe that did it. I checked the nest, which I had been avoiding on purpose, and no others were down there. Nature can be mean.
Editing to add that I decided to look around a little more in that area and discovered a second little one who is most definitely alive and looks pretty healthy. Hope he stays that way.

(172 posts)We are commuting distance from Atlanta so lots of folks up here don't have "sticks education". I always feel so bad when I see a lost pet sign taped to a pole or traffic sign because I know it is pretty likely that a coyote or raptor (hawk or owl) got Snowball, and kitty is not coming home.
And once you've seen what a hawk or racoon can do to a chicken, you don't get that warm fuzzy feeling when you see them anymore.

(4,768 posts)Husband rescued a kitten being attacked by a raccoon. It disfigured her face. She is now an indoor cat, and the closest she wants to get to outside is an open window.
