Good morning my DU family,

I gave up on watching news channels immediately after the 2024 election when I realized that in many ways, we as Dems had been as equally misled by MSNBC as Fox news viewers.

People with limited access to the outside world, be they shut ins, rural farmers whose neighbors are half a mile away, including myself, have used the voices that drone on endlessly on these channels to replace the real need for human companionship.

It is with the above reasons and more that my sanity has at least in some respects been restored by breaking that bad habit and it is for that reason that I value DU so much more today than ever before.

So when I confess that most mornings, I open DU with a small prayer that the main headline will be something along the lines of "The National Nightmare Is Over."

Until then if course, I'll continue to be grateful for the conversations that happen here, the information that is so freely shared, along with whatever dose of news I care to ingest.

Your humanity and engagement is is such a welcome place to be informed, engaged, and yes, sometimes corrected out of some prior naivete or ignorance, always in good spirit.

So as we start what we can only hope to be the final week of this nightmare, let me thank you and offer the hope that you gain as much from me as I do from you.

Please give us a day filled with opportunities to know our value to our community, to.embrace the value of others in it, and to gratefully offer our hands in friendship to one another.

Have a day filled with Unity DU.
Love, John

I keep wondering what shit Vance is going to try to pull. Sorry to be a downer. I think Vance is even more dangerous. The Orange one is barely able to function but Vance is a real threat.

I haven't had TV for over 12 years.

I use DU and Hacker News as my "aggregators" and I can just skim the one-line titles to know what's going on, and what to read or not to read. Since Hacker News has over 200 posts a day, that's a challenge, and since tech was my living, that's not easy. Hacker, in this sense means white-hat coder, and the audience consists of coders, techies in general, managers and VC's.

But, as you noted, living in the country, not seeing neighbors, sparse as they are, for months on end, I put sports talk radio on, knowing that it's entirely meaningless (1) and good exercise, picking up the remote to halt the carpet-bombing repetitive ads, every segment.

(1) speculating on team moves is a waste, since the hosts and listeners have zero influence, and recounting game hits and misses is pointless. The deeds are done. Does it help to hear others vent? I think it's a guilty pleasure, even though negative vibes are not good, but they are someone else's negativity, and I have my own hobbies and chores (a very long list of chores).

Family being so far away, we do message and email all day, and there's community here. I quoted this to my family and it rang bells.

ALL THE SUPPORT FROM OUR DU FRIENDS REALLY DID MEAN A LOT -- when any of us finds ourselves in the midst of a crisis, it's not the crisis that beats you down, it's the loneliness. Knowing that folks you never met and never will meet are concerned about you, worried about you, sharing your worry keeps you going. THANK YOU ALL.

I don't think it was you, but a lot of us do love the shared values and compassion for others.

The one I listen to is the 50,000 watt station in San Francisco, which has a decent signal down to central California (and beyond). I'm just an old radio nut. The first electronic kit I built was a shortwave radio.

But these days, they all either have their own apps or stream or both. I was using their youtube channel, mainly because it's way clearer, the local ads are not allow to play on YouTube (YAY) and so on, but I deem it a waste to be gulping video when the announcers are butt-ugly and I only want the sound anyway.

And there are "radio" apps that re-feed the various streams. Getting up to squelch "Kars for Kids" is good exercise. One needs to break computer sessions!!!

And, since there is only ONE classical station whose radio waves reach this spot, via a repeater that quits every time snow crushes its antenna, I basically do ALL my classical music listening over the internet. The classical switches to jazz from 7 to midnight, but it's not jazz that I care for. TBH, it sounds like lounge music to me, not REAL jazz (YMMV)

Favorites are
• Classical California (basically KUSC, they merged with KDFC in the SF bay area). I use the app. (or the stream in the browser)
• WQXR, I use their app or browse. Very often, the "Operavore" stream, or the main stream for non-opera stuff (also great)
• WBJC in Baltimore. Great programming. A junior college, in fact. https://wbjc.com
I use the "alternate player" and that works for me.

On the internet, distance is a non-matter. Follow the mike jockeys in your favorite team(s) town.

Following checking the weather each morning, DU is the next site I peruse. I enjoy the wide expanse of opinions; many corroborated by including sites to read further. A bit of sanity in this insane world of competitive news reporting.

A Beneteau 321, so weather is a bit more important to me than most. I need to close hatches when appropriate and do hate taking a 10 minute dinghy ride to shore or back in the rain.
