Gift ideas for a crocheter?

Hi all,

I need to buy a gift for my friend's mother who is a crocheter, and I was hoping you might have some suggestions. I was just thinking of things she would be unlikely to buy for herself. I have seen a suggestion that luxury yarns are good. Any suggestions on exactly what type of yarns? What about accessories? Vintage crochet hooks, for example?

1. I'm not an expert on yarns yet so can't help you there,

but I received a really great crochet hook holder from my sister last year. It's a quilted rectangular thingie with pockets for about 20 hooks, scissors and stitch-holders. You can roll it up with everything tucked inside and it ties with a nice ribbon. I was forever losing my hooks .... this holder is so handy and I love it. Maybe something like this with vintage hooks?

2. stitch markers

I like decorative stitch markers... lobster claw hooks with little charms dangling from them. So much more fun than a safety pin There are some on etsy.com

A book of amigurumi patterns, if you think she'd like making little stuffed animals for grandkids.

Personally, I'd prefer a gift certificate to a yarn store rather than a skein of luxury yarn which may not be enough for what I'd want to do with it, or a color I don't like, or (fill in the blank).

so she can pick out her own yarns for whatever dream project she may have had in mind for a while

6. Yeah, I was just hoping to pick out something myself, rather than send a gift card

so it would be more personal. Maybe I will pick out a *little* something and then also include a gift card for her to pick out something too.

7. Speaking as a crocheter,

hooks are not a good idea, because the friend either has all the hooks she needs, or her preferences are very specific to her, so to buy her hooks, while thoughtful, isn't a very good idea.

Yarn could be nice, but it's a total shot in the dark as to what kind of yarn or how much. Do you know very much about the kinds of projects she makes?

A nice crochet hook holder/organizer sounds very nice. Perhaps a book on crochet patterns, or yarn could be good. If you kind find out what yarn store or stores she prefers, a gift certificate to one, while it feels impersonal to you, would be wildly appreciated. Trust me.

I have all kinds of hooks in different sizes so someone would have to know what specific sizes I don't have, like the jumbo hooks

I think I will get her something small but unique that I pick out.... I have seen some very pretty hand made hooks, for example, and send it with a gift card for her to pick out what she wants. That way she will know I put thought into picking something for her, but as you have all expressed, she'll be able to pick her color of yarn or whatever she needs.

11. I'd say luxury yarn

but crocheting eats it up like crazy so you'd have to get her quite a lot of it and it can be expensive if you want quiviut or camel down.

There are specific breed wool fibers that will feel like pure luxury but aren't that much more expensive and some of it is even Superwash, meaning you have to work at it to get it to felt in the washer. Merino and Blue Faced Leicester are breeds to look for if you go over to Etsy or Artfire looking for yarn.

Also look at what she likes to do. If it's doilies, you'd actually be better off with cotton. If it's hats or other wearables, go for the luxury wool.
