(1,850 posts)Looks so soft and warm! I can't tell--is it crocheted?

(1,850 posts)and even though I learned to crochet, knitting comes more naturally. I have a crochet pattern for a cute hat that I'm trying to make for my grandchild-to-be, and it just isn't turning out right--too small, and too flat. Any suggestions?

(12,051 posts)First, does the pattern have you crochet from the top down or the bottom up? If it's top down, you should be adding stitches in each row for a while. If it's bottom up, you would be decreasing stitches by crocheting 2 together at some point.
If you want to PM me the pattern and a photo of your hat, I'll take a look. I will tell you though that many patterns, esp free ones, have errors and/or are written in such a way as to be hard to follow.

(1,850 posts)I would love to pm you the pattern for suggestions, but it wasn't a free pattern, and I'm kind of concerned about violating the designer's rights . . .
It seems simple enough, but I'm having a hard time with it. I've tried using different size crochet hooks, and the bigger ones might work, but pushing it through the loops was so hard I got real frustrated.
Here is a link to the Ravelry page for it.

I have found a bunch more really cute crochet stuff, so I'm thinking I'm going to have to do a crash course in crochet!

(12,051 posts)the bottom of the Ravelry page there is a detailed tutorial offered by the seller? I didn't go through it myself, but it sure could help you.
From the look of the pattern, you probably increase quickly as you start at the top, and then decrease to make the cloche-like fit over the baby's head.
If you are having trouble pushing your crochet hook through the loops, then you are crocheting waaaay too tightly. If you are using the yarn and hook given in the pattern, you should have a nice loose crochet going. Make sure to crochet the base chain verrrry loosely so you have room to work. As you make the chain, the hook should move very easily.
Cute pattern, by the way!

I am going to keep on trying with it, and will try to ease up on the tension.
