(24,087 posts)Im on board with single payer 100%. Being a self employed family and thus self insured, our monthly insurance premium is twice the amount my mortgage payment. Soon I wont be able to afford insurance and obviously cant afford to be without it. I know Im not alone on this. Somethings got to give. Didnt know about Common Dreams, so thank you! I will check it out.

(2,872 posts)sometimes all the distractions tend to veer our attention away from things we should be fighting FOR.. like I said in the teachers union post, teachers & nurses are leading the fight in things we should be fighting for and campaigning on.. I hope for the sake of your business & many others that single payer or Medicare-for-all becomes a standard plank of the Democratic platform by 2020 - it's obvious that the tide has shifted, unfortunately it will not be a standard campaign issue for 2018 at this point..

(24,087 posts)large corporations aren't supportive of single payer. We own a small business that provides health insurance for our employees and I would LOVE to save that money every month. We provide the insurance because I don't want our staff to worry about getting sick or hurt and being bankrupt. If they aren't worried or stressed over something like that, it is better for them and in turn better for our business. We only employ 7 people...I can't imagine what health insurance costs companies with hundreds of employees. Seems it would make good business sense to get behind single payer.

(2,872 posts)but the health insurance & pharmaceutical lobbies are stronger then any sensible corporate support for a single payer system, just like the oil industry lobby is more powerful than the eco-friendly alternatives that we have.. campaign finance plays a big role in all of this..

(1 post)The "medical' insurance industry is enormous. Think of all the employees, facilities, and overlapping services that would have significant changes. The fight against interruption or modification of employment, scares most of these personnel. The CEOs might have to surrender significant compensation too.
Too many people have anxiety about the status of their health care costs. My physician friends in other industrialized countries tell me that their patients receive excellent care, are pleased with their health care policies, and don't fear bankruptcy from worries about the cost of medical care.
Medicare, for instance, is a working model of a single payor format, with some additional choices. Seniors and others with disabilities still have some financial concerns, but not near the levels of those not in this 'program'. Some of my physician friends disagree,,,just as some or many of our family and friends disagree about this current political craziness.
I would vote for a single payor system. BUT... would segue with it being an available option to see how it affects overall health, both physical and mental.
I, personally, would not have a problem with the single payor format. Hours are spent daily taxing the medical staff with time and burdensome formalities which provide no real improvement to the well-being of you, me.....us, any/all of us.
Guess what? Most medical professionals have their patients' health and well-being first and foremost on their minds, but, it is taking a toll on both their families and them. Have you noticed that your doctor spends less time looking you in the eye and listening to you? Health care providers are tired of this fight. Many are retiring earlier. Many are modifying their practice models just to save their sanity.
I don't consider myself a socialist, but see this as a productive stabilizer of the harrowing decline of affordable, jumbled, confusing, and frightening status quo. We do have some "social" programs all around us that do work: Police, fire, military, highways, nutrition assistance, etc...I am one who believes health care is a right and will vote for a well received program that helps us all.
Just my 3 cents worth.

(62,527 posts)on single payer. I love my single payer socialistic health care from one of the largest systems in the world - the VA. And I'm no socialist, either.
But health care and conserving of a healthy population is just one thing I consider as important as any other service to be offered by any responsive and responsible government.
Oh yes - Welcome to DU!!!
