Switching from a steel string. Local music store is going out of business and offering discounts, so this might be a good time to buy. I'm a beginner, learning fingerpicking. Don't want and can't afford anything too expensive. But I do want something from a reputable manufacturer.

(3,396 posts)is consistently the best at moderate priced guitars. The more you pay the easier they are too play.
I've owned 2 and they were both good.

(21,107 posts)They make a solid classical guitar.
I picked a nice one up several years ago for $300.00, a C-128. It is made out of solid rosewood except for the top which is spruce.
It looks like this one here:

I think you can find one for much less.
Try checking reverb.com
You might find a much better deal there.
Best of luck!

(70,655 posts)I have one & played several.
Their design creates a loud clear sound. It lacks the warmth of Martin (which I have, both 6 & 12 string) or Taylor, but those are 5 to 10 times the cost.
Now, I've only got a steel string, not a nylon string but I've got no reason the believe their classical models don't measure up.
I use mine for fingerstyle too, but I never have it tuned like a standard guitar.
Right now I've got it tuned to a C6 chord because I'm messing with Zeppelin's Bron-Yr-Aur.
If I hadn't gotten the super deal I got on my 12 string Martin, I almost certainly would have bought the Takamine.
(BTW: The company is named after a mountain in Japan. )

(21,107 posts)The Takamine I bought was made in 1985.
You might look for one around this age.
You seriously cannot beat rosewood on a acoustic guitar.
I am selling my steel string guitar soon as I cannot play it any longer as my hands are numb from an illness I have.
However, I can still play the Takamine. It is made in Japan.
www.takamine.com has more info. about their guitars.
I rather think I got a deal on it OR ebay.com's prices are ridiculous!
Best of luck.
