(27,621 posts)I picked up a nondescript six-string over 50 years ago and got recently proficient on the basic chords. I was out to sea with a lot of time on my hands, practicing for hours, developing calluses on my fretting fingertips. In a careless moment, I pressed the thinnest string at an odd angle and broke the callus deeper than I liked. Took two months to heal properly, by which time I was reluctant to get back up on that particular horse.
All considered, my left hand is still in decent shape, but I would have to pace myself with the right hand, which has endured many years of repetitive motion, and I dont want to develop carpal tunnel at this stage of life. I may explore more ergonomic ways to make noises.

(70,656 posts)...there are ways to strum by working the whole lower arm from the elbow. No stress on the wrist.
And, there are ways to pick individual notes using only the fingers to move the pick. It's not as fast & versatile, but it works.
I've seen YouTube videos describing both. Here's a guy that has videos for people with physical limitations.
I do think it best to avoid fingerstyle though. Lots of great fingerstyle players have experienced bouts of tendinitis and that sounds like a bad thing for you
