(5,403 posts)my brother and I drove through the mountains of W. Va. on our way to Rock Hill, S. C. for my baby son's 50th birthday bash. The views were stunning. We did not have time to stop at the New River overlook but I had seen it in summer back when I could walk up all those steps with ease. Even in summer, that is breathtaking. I imagine the soil is perfect for blueberries since they love acid soil. I know when my kids were young we would go to an old strip mine area and pick enough wild huckleberries to last all winter for pies and pancakes.

(6,819 posts)No people are visible in the photo, but during blueberry season there are usually pickers on the heath, especially soon after sunrise or in the evening. Many of the berry pickers I've met there were using berry-picking devices and were filling huge bags. I have a more casual approach and usually handpick just enough to take back to camp for dessert or pancakes.

(5,403 posts)The kids ate almost as many as they picked. It took hours a couple times a week during the season but was worth it for pies or pancakes or in lemon pound cake is school lunches.
