Gavin Newsom tells California mayors to 'step up' on retail theft, 'make an example' out of suspects
California Gov. Gavin Newsom did not mince words Tuesday while speaking about a recent rash of retail thefts in the San Francisco Bay Area.
The governor called on local mayors to "step up" following a string of robberies over the weekend that targeted high-end retailers in San Francisco's Union Square, as well as shops around Walnut Creek, Hayward and San Jose.
Theyre not just stealing peoples products and impacting their livelihoods, theyre stealing a sense of place and confidence, Newsom said, speaking Monday from a vaccine clinic, according to CBS Local.
Thats why youve got to get serious about it," he continued. "Im not the mayor of California. But I was a mayor. And I know when things like this happen, mayors have to step up. Thats not an indictment. Thats not a cheap shot.
