CA-AD32: Gov. Newsom calls for special election in California's 32nd Assembly District

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. — (KBAK/FOX58) Governor Gavin Newsom has made it official. A special election will determine Congressman Vince Fong's replacement in California's 32nd Assembly District. The nomination period for candidates in the upcoming election is set to begin on December 19, 2024, and will run through January 2, 2025. Eyewitness News spoke with Blake Zante, Executive Director of the Maddy Institute, about what to expect.

The primary election date is scheduled for February 25, 2025. Polls will be open from 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. on that day. Vote-by-mail ballots must be received by 8:00 p.m. on Election Day at any polling location, drop box, the Elections Division, or any ballot drop-off location. Ballots returned by mail must be postmarked by February 25, 2025, and received by the Elections Division by March 4, 2025.

If a candidate secures a majority of the votes, defined as 50% plus one, a special general election will not be necessary. If a general is needed, it will take place in April 2025.
