A bill that would prohibit institutions of higher learning from asking about a students criminal history during the application process is awaiting action in the House after being approved by the Judiciary Committee.
The bill would prohibit colleges and universities from considering a previous criminal history when making the decision to enroll a student in a class or a degree program. It would also prevent using it to determine their eligibility for financial aid, grants or scholarships.
The bill also creates the Postsecondary Prison Education Program Office which would approve colleges and universities to operate prison education programs at correctional facilities throughout the state and oversee grant programs and other ways of educating students who are incarcerated.
The bill originated in the Higher Education and Employment Advancement Committee.

(2,636 posts)If I fill out a job application, I have to indicate whether I've had a felony. I don't have a problem with asking and providing a space to explain.
Plenty of young men have felony convictions for being drunk, DUI, or assault from a fight at a bar. Not sure I'd want a convicted rapist, sexual felon, or murderer on campus.
That said, I do like the idea of expanding college education opportunities to those incarcerated.

(2,732 posts)upper middle class and wealthy youth are handed over to parents, not booked.
No one reported Kavanaugh, who allegedly has/had a history of sexual assaults, then throw in how some merchants keep calling the police on minority youth for crimes like shoplifting, and the police profiling and targeting minority and or poor depending on the local who's who status.
In other words, youth crimes committed by middle and upper class youth will have no record
and youth who are poor and or minority can, do, will have records without having committed any crimes, records of detainment and arrest even when no charges are filed.
