Delaware bill to take guns from the mentally ill passes House

The Delaware House on Tuesday overwhelmingly passed legislation that would allow police to temporarily seize firearms from some whom a mental health worker deems to be a danger to themselves and others.

The 38-0 vote marked the fourth gun control bill to be released by the General Assembly's lower chamber this year. The measure now heads to the state Senate.

House Bill 302 was introduced before the February mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida. But its chief sponsor, Rep. David Bentz, D-Christiana, said the proposal is designed to prevent similar incidents in which a gunman is known to be troubled beforehand.

"Every time this happens, we hear both parties talk about ... how we need to do something about mental health and making sure people who are committed to committing acts of violence can't get access to weapons," he said. "I think this is good policy."
