Bill to outlaw underage marriage divides Delaware Legislature

Cases like Johnson's are exactly what Rep. Kim Williams, D-Newport, is seeking to prevent in Delaware.

A bill she introduced in March seeks to close a loophole in state law that allows someone under the age of 18 to marry if they have permission from a parent and the blessing of a Family Court judge.

Republicans are pushing back, however, over concerns the legislation would impact underage marriages beyond those Williams is targeting.

"I am completely against forced marriage," said state Rep. Tim Dukes, R-Laurel. "But this bill is overly broad and could harm responsible couples in loving relationships."
