Delaware auditor says audit of her office shows she might not have money to perform duties
The Delaware state auditor fired a warning shot over the bow of the Legislature Thursday, unveiling a new report she said shows the office may not have the money for mandated work, much less adding on the auditing of charter schools.
"I don't know if I can say everything we need to get accomplished is going to get accomplished with our current resources," Kathy McGuiness told The News Journal after a Thursday press conference in Dover.
She revealed she paid $45,000 to outside firm Baker Tilly to audit her own office. Its report showed, among other things, that the former director had not been doing the duties mandated by state law, McGuiness said.
Her announcement came as lawmakers had five legislative days from the end of the session, and have not yet passed the $4.45 billion state budget. McGuiness asked for a $1 million raise for her office, which has a budget of $2.9 million that she says dates back to 2008. She has a staff of about 20.
