Melbourne Sets 2026 Election, Vote on Zoning Board Changes

MELBOURNE, FL – Melbourne City Council unanimously approved a resolution June 9 calling for a Nov. 3, 2026, municipal election to fill three City Council seats and placing a charter amendment referendum before voters.

The resolution, approved as part of the consent agenda, calls for the election of council members from Districts 2, 4 and 6 to four-year terms and for a referendum on whether the City Council may delegate the duties of the Zoning Board of Adjustment to the Planning and Zoning Board. The resolution also provides for a runoff election on Nov. 17, 2026, if two candidates tie for a seat and authorizes the city clerk to coordinate the election with the Brevard County Supervisor of Elections.

Current officeholders for the seats are District 2 Council Member Mark LaRusso, District 4 Council Member Rachael Bassett and Vice Mayor and District 6 Council Member Julie Kennedy.

The referendum stems from Ordinance No. 2026-25, which the council approved on second reading June 9 by a 6-1 vote, with District 5 Council Member Mimi Hanley dissenting.
