I'm back in SoCal now for awhile, but I've lived in Kaimuki and Palolo (Oahu for those that don't leave the Outer Islands) - All are welcome including "Visitors" to the Islands!
Let's see, we've got:
Lau Lau - can't forget that now.
Chicken Katsu - I like mine from Gracies or otherwise drenched in curry
Beef Curry
A Zippy's Chili Hot Dog Bento
And some Leonard's Malasadas - Who's Malasadas? Leonards Malasadas
What'd everyone else bring?

(22,144 posts)I tend to go for the Zippy Teri beef plate or the garlic shrimp from one of the trucks on the North Shore.

(27,759 posts)I always stop at Romy's when doing the North Shore Circle. Haleiwa restaurants are so-so, but the Kahuku shrimp trucks are amazing.

This was especially true for the years I lived on the next block.

(22,144 posts)Kings IIRC was down near Holiday Mart (that shows my age). Still closer than Kapahulu

We got a Zippy's on Maui now, so I can get chili spaghetti anytime...

(27,759 posts)I used to get dinner there like one-night a week. Mahi Mahi or Fried Chicken plate. They've expanded the seating area onto the neighboring property. That's Obama's favorite too.
Aloha Poi Boy from Maui!
Grab a Heineken or Primo from the ice chest if you like. I really like Maui Brewings offerings over Kona's. The Hawa'ii Nui Brewing Company is mean too.

(36,143 posts)Oh, wait. Yes I have! I just found the KFC menu for Hawaii and located something we don't have here, so it must be local...
'Homestyle biscuits' as sides?
ellisonz
(27,759 posts)They have KFC in Australia...you poor deprived people; most people in the States take their fried chicken much more seriously than KFC, which seems to be in decline
The local-style fried chicken is much better! The Zippy Chili and Fried Chicken combo is ono!
Violet_Crumble
(36,143 posts)We have coleslaw, potato and gravy, chips, and buns.
Heh, I don't go to KFC. We've got a local lot called Kingsley's and their fried chicken is really yummy

(78,249 posts)Saimin (Japanese-style noodle soup) at McDonald's.
Chili and rice (50 cents!!) at Wendy's.
And the topper: Spam on a Croissan'wich at Burger King!!
It's almost like when they adapt their menus for foreign countries.

My favorite island is Kauai. So much variety in such little space!

(78,249 posts)Yes, it's in cans. Dale's Pale Ale from Colorado started this trend. Hikers, fishermen, etc. need good beer, too! (Also cans would be cheaper out here than bottles.)
And yes, there's local beer. This is a welcome new development in the past three-plus years since I've been away!
edit: And yes, I have some in the fridge, in my Honolulu hotel room. I'm here through next Saturday the 29th!

(27,759 posts)Best when drank on the beach on a cool Hawaiian night.
Glad you're having fun! I'm jealous here in SoCal - it was cold as fuck last night. Brrr...
I would say the Varsity on University has the best selection of the local brew (albeit with the college crowd).
KamaAina
(78,249 posts)and you are correct: 6.8% content. Hardly the equal of NorCal's Lagunitas Maximus at a whopping 8.2%, but what the hey!
