Hokule'a crew honors Hawaiian leader Twinkle Borge as it departs Waianae waters
Twinkle gave everything she had to homeless families, over and over again, and finally started a place for everyone. Her leadership, wisdom and aloha guided the community to solve problems found to be unsolvable elsewhere. Hawai'i will miss her but God willing, we will all remember the lessons we learned from her. Hokule’a crew honors Twinkle Borge as it departs Waianae waters
WAIANAE, Hawaii (Island News) – The Hokule’a will leave Pokai Bay after a week of engaging students and the community with a variety of activities, and return to Sand Island.
While crews head out of the bay, they plan on honoring the late Twinkle Borge with an oli, pū, and a flower drop. The Hawaiian flag will also be flown at half-staff along with a pink lei hulu (feather lei) on Hokule’a as the canoe will sail along the Waianae Coast. The crew will also stop off-shore of Nanakuli to honor the community with pū and oli. (blowing conch shell and Hawaiian chants.)
“Twinkle was the navigator who would find the smallest light in each person and help them find their way out of the darkness. She helped so many people find their way, and we are thankful that the legacy she started with Pu’uhonua O Waianae will continue,” said Kaina Holomalia, a Waianae native and Hokule’a crew member.
Pokai Bay, Waianae was the fourth stop of Hokule’a’s Pae Aina Statewide Sail. Its next stop will be Kaunakakai, Moloka’i where the canoe is tentatively scheduled to be September 29 - October 6, weather permitting.
Both the Hokule’a and Hikianalia are scheduled to be in Lahaina to be part of the Hawaii Department of Education’s Ho’akea Maui event, from September 17-21, which is a teacher professional development program that’s based at Hanaka’o’o Beach Park.
