Iowa
Related: About this forumSo when did this (once great) state become part of the confederacy?
I mean the whole state is red except the Iowa City/Cedar Rapids corridor and part of the DesMoines area. And even there, repukes got elected. It may be time to move to Illinois as I live on the border and have many relatives there.

(2,873 posts)Republicans in control during the census and redistricting killed Democratic hopes here for years to come.

(48 posts)Hi, I don't live in Iowa anymore, but I am thinking of moving back there to be closer to family and friends.
I thought that we had an independent commission that made Iowa the national model to prevent gerrymandering?

(2,873 posts)Republicans were able to change districts here in Iowa so that Rep. Cindy Axne was not able to get re-elected. The Democratic strong holds in SW Iowa were broken up. The party in control of redistricting after the Census has a lot of power to shape election outcomes to their advantage over the next decade.

(6,486 posts)We keep clumping together more and more, in already dark blue states.
NY Republicans have continually moved to Florida and have finally turned it into a red state.

(27,621 posts)Rural areas bordering Iowa, that is. It seemed pretty red on my last trip through that area (east of Dubuque).

(579 posts)And the 17th district in Illinois is likely going to stay solid blue. I'm right across the river from that district. My sister and many cousins live there. I used to work over there. Very easy commute.

(27,621 posts)I would never presume and tell you whether its a good idea to move, but the IL side sounds preferable.

(2,997 posts)Embarrassed that I live where covid Kimmy, insurrectionist grassley, etc easily win.
The media here never calls them on their lies. Grassley gets away with votes against Medicare, ethanol, and wind power. The two biggest industry in Iowa. Never asked about the millions his farm siphoned off fed aid. Kimmy never asked about our high murder rate, higher death rate for covid, always asked about raw numbers...of course Iowa has fewer total murders than Illinois, the entire state has only about 25% of the Chicago population...but murders per capita, Iowa higher.
We underspend Arkansas on education now...Iowa used to be proud of it's schools.
Now it really is part of the confederacy....
And of course, how can anyone vote for grassley and his literally 50 years of voting to overturn roe and criminalization of abortion.
Ashamed to be an Iowa captive for a job in the IC corridor.

I wish we had the resources to move back, but we don't and no one wants to buy a house in a stupid small red town in Iowa.
So, we'll be stuck here, with a Democratic party that doesn't seem to care about anything. It's like they are trying to lose.

(48 posts)My understanding is that Iowa has the lowest growth rates for both the economy and population.

(727 posts)Now they are all red? I grew up in Iowa but haven't lived there since 1981. Still have a sister and many cousins there. Unfortunately, they are almost all republicans. I used to think I'd like to move back there in retirement, but now, no way. I love Iowa City but couldn't stand the state government.

(11,869 posts)And, had the same dream of returning to the beauty of the Decorah area to retire. Now WI is a hellscape and Iowa is right there with them. MN, IL, and MI all took enlightened paths. Iowa is aging, isolated, and believes itself to be independent thinking. In fact, they are highly manipulated and provincialized.

(727 posts)Mostly because my husband is from there, and they have good services for our special needs adult son. Hate the gerrymandering though. Thank goodness Evers won!

(11,869 posts)If we want to retire in either state. Minnesota could be nice.
