Special election on Emmetsburg CSD debt levy to be held tomorrow

EMMETSBURG, Iowa (KCAU) — On Tuesday, voters in the Emmetsburg Community School District will decide whether or not to raise the district’s debt levy limit to potentially help build a new elementary school.

If voters approve, the levy limit will increase $4.05 per $1,000 of taxable property value. The school district says the vote is not a request to increase taxes, but rather would allow the district the option to raise the levy in the future.

In November, voters will be asked to approve a nearly $30 million general obligation bond for the construction of a new elementary school. This November vote and Tuesday’s levy vote are part of a two-step process.

According to the school district, the current West Elementary School is facing a number of “facility and infrastructure challenges,” including necessary improvements to heating, air conditioning, classrooms, the exterior, safety systems, space, and more. The building has been in use for 70 years.
