Republican majorities pass Bevin's pension bill, special session ends

FRANKFORT — Republican Gov. Matt Bevin said his pension-relief bill, passed Wednesday by the state Senate, isn't a fix for the state's pension crisis, but it's a step in the right direction.

Minority Democrats agree with only the first half of that statement.

The Republican-controlled Senate ended another chapter in the never-ending story of Kentucky's public pension crisis by passing the bill to give local health departments, regional universities, spouse abuse shelters and other groups immediate relief from soaring pension costs.

The Senate’s 27-11 vote — over the cries of Democrats who say it will cut benefits of many employees of the groups — brought an end to the special session of the Kentucky General Assembly that began on Friday.

Bevin, who authored the bill and required that it alone be considered during this session, signed it into law Wednesday afternoon.
