Residents oppose radioactive cleaning facility in Gibson

After living in Gibson for 62 years, resident Virginia Prince said she was tired of companies using her back yard as a dumping ground for hazardous waste.

“It seems like they want to dump everything out in Gibson,” Prince said. “I don’t know why. We’re not a dumping ground. I’m concerned about contamination and the safety of the people. It’s like we don’t matter.”

Prince was one of dozens of concerned Gibson residents who gathered at the Devon Keller Memorial Center tonight for a town hall meeting to address a local company’s plan to conduct on-site cleaning and decontamination of radioactive material at its Gibson facility.

Modern American Recycling Services, a state-licensed company in Gibson that specializes in the cleaning and decontamination of equipment, vessels and tanks for recycling purposes, submitted an application Aug. 24 for a permit for the project.
