Obama administration makes second request for Louisiana flood relief from Congress

President Barack Obama's administration put forward a second request for Louisiana flood relief funding from Congress Monday (Nov. 21), though Gov. John Bel Edwards had been advocating for more funding than it seems the state might be slated to get.

The Obama administration is asking Congress to provide $3.15 billion in disaster financial support for Louisiana and several other states that have suffered damage from flooding and Hurricane Matthew in the last year.

Edwards had been asking for a total of $4 billion in recovery money just for Louisiana. The governor returns to Washington D.C. next Thursday (Dec. 1) to lobby for more flood support. Congress is expected to vote on the flood package as part of a larger budget bill in mid-December.

It's not clear yet how the money might be split up between all the states included in the request. Texas, West Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina and Florida were all mentioned in the Obama administration's letter as places eligible for some of the $3.15 billion package as well. The Obama administration also urged Congress to consider giving money to the people of Flint, Michigan to assist with its water poisoning problems.
