John Bel Edwards to make case for special legislative session on budget

Gov. John Bel Edwards is expected to make his case for calling a special legislative session to close Louisiana's $303 million budget gap during a meeting with the Legislature's budget committees Friday morning (Jan. 27). The governor will be responding directly to recent statements by House Republicans who have argued that a special session isn't necessary to erase the deficit.

The governor won't be providing a line-by-line plan for solving the problem, as some legislators expected, but more of a broad vision for what he thinks needs to be done. However, administration officials said they doubt Edwards will propose:

*Any revenue-raising measures, such as new taxes, to close the budget gap

*Cutting spending in primary and secondary education in the middle of the fiscal year.
