I got out of bed at three AM and it was snowing. I thought another mess to cleanup. I turned on the television and there was a report on the storm from the mid-west down to the gulf coast. People were experiencing conditions they had never imagined. As for me the house was nice and warm the electricity was on and the generator was ready to go if needed. I have a large snow blower that will take of over two feet of snow. We are stocked on over two weeks of every necessities we need. Sophie the cat even has a new bed which she seems quiet fond of. I will not complain after seeing people in their cars trying to keep warm.

(27,354 posts)The forecast was for 5 to 8". The snow is ending so I went out and measured about 4" of a very light and fluffy snow. There are lots of cancellations, which is good because despite not getting buried with snow, some of the roads look to be very treacherous. Yesterday it felt like there was an ice slick beneath the plowed snow and it took me almost an hour to drive 12 miles. The air temps are too cold for road salt to do much of a job. Right now it's 11 and tonight's forecast is for -4.
It does look like this brutal cold snap is about to end and by this time, next week, we could be in the mid to upper 30's
Living in Michigan, being prepared for bad Winter weather is kind of second nature. I have a generator and always keep at least 2 weeks worth of necessities on hand during the Winter season, and that includes firewood. This preparation got me through a week long Winter storm related power outage, back in 2013.
So, I can kind of imagine what people are going through in Texas and the other southern states, but at least I can realistically anticipate and prepare for that kind of weather.

(25,432 posts)we got 1/2 of ice and the lights only flickered once. The 8 inches of snow missed us. 1/2 of ice is harder to clean up than 6 inches of snow though, unless it warms up.

(3,024 posts)...pun not intended. No power, no water, but at least I have a fire place and a gas stove. Some dont have that much. I see this as a blessing: Secessionists getting a taste of real independence from the feds. Theyre already squalling for help!

(402 posts)No cat has ever liked the new bed, they always prefer the box it came in...!

(72 posts)You are right they go for a box every time. This has lead me to removing most things outside and not bringing the box in. When my wife is packing a box to ship and finds the cat has made a bed in it I smother a laugh so as not to be in the same boat as the cat.

(30,949 posts)I got really lucky this time around.
For some reason my power never went off
and my pipes are still good too.
I had a food delivery last Sunday morning, and
I managed to schedule an HEB pickup for
this coming Sunday.
My bridge game got cancelled bc my partner
lost power, but that's pretty minor comparatively.
I also expect my electricity bill to go way up bc
of this, but I'm not sure by how much. That's bc
my heater is a hog, even though I've got it at 68.
My family seems OK for now too. Prayin for a
good outcome to all this. It's been a living hell
for so many.
Texas is a GOP mess. That's what made this so
much worse than it had to be. I hate that!

Central Ohio is well covered but it is beautiful. That being said I know I am in the privileged group who doesnt have to drive or work outside. Or shovel my driveway. Im supporting the local neighborhood teenage economy. I usually do my own but when enterprising young people reach out to the subdivision with their business proposition ... 😁. Bundled up and took Zeus Dog for his morning walk. We were the first out - snow as pristine as it can be. No even rabbit tracks. It was a beautiful sight watching a big black lab doing zoomies in the fluffy white stuff. Hes napping now - Zeus Dog is an old boy but he had a great time.
I also worry about people in Texas - including my brother and his wife. Ive lived there and know full well the ugly impact of a winter storm.
Did anyone notice how quickly President Biden declared the entire state a disaster area?
Stay safe everyone.
