Maine
Related: About this forumWhat must-see in Maine would you recommend to a new visitor to our state?
I know it's hard to name just one. But if someone asked you what one area/site they should definitely see what would you tell them?
Right now, I'd have to say Acadia especially Schoodic Point. Tomorrow I might say Katahdin.
Maybe we can get some interest going in this Group.

(53,475 posts)Acadia is an obvious winner. On the way there, one can stop at Camden Hills State Park where I took these shots...

And it's a drive, but going up to Jackman is a treat. Anytime you drive up the mountain, then come to a lake, it's special. Streams headed for the sea have a waterfall or rapids about every 150 feet.
When you come over the mountains and can see the valley all the way to Quebec it's absolutely stunning (pictures just don't do justice).
Anyway, I loved my time in Maine, and would visit again in a heartbeat.

(4,769 posts)but I do visit your beautiful state quite often. Our favorite spot is Pemaquid Point. We used to just do little side trips there on our way to Acadia, but lately we have been staying at the old Hotel Pemaquid at least overnight so that my husband can photograph at different times of day. We love the crashing surf at high tide and the tidal pools at low tide.

(18,161 posts)And I don't know if I like it better in the bleakness of winter or in the height of potato and canola blossoms in summer. Lovely place.

(758 posts)I live in Michigan but my in-laws live in Maine. We like to book a bed & breakfast in Boothbay. It is incredibly charming. We enjoy whale watches, Puffin tours and lobster stew at the Lobster Dock. Oh, I wear my Moxie t-shirt too
MaineDem
(18,161 posts)East Boothbay and Ocean Point, too.
MarianJack
(10,237 posts)..is like a combilation of Bar Harbor and some of Old Orchard Beach. We love it there for a fun day trip from Augusta any time of year. Pier Pizza is DELICIOUS! YUMSKI!

I admit the Bean/Freeport area is commercial venture, but it's a fun experience.

(10,237 posts)We honeymooned in Old Orchard in 1998 and traveling around that week+ made us want to move here in 2002. I have a special place in my heart for Old Orchard.
Lake Saint George is my favorite place in the world. My wife and I want our ashes scattered there when we go.
We've lived in Maine for 10 years as of June and we wouldn't live anywhere else.
PEACE!

(10,237 posts)...I'll look for Hattie's today. I've never sen it but I was also not looking for it (not a seafood person myself).
I'll get back to you tomorrow.
BTW, May I recommend Lisa's Restaurant on Bangor street or the China Din-ah in (wait for it) China!
PEACE!
MarianJack
(10,237 posts)...that Hattie's is alive and well in Hallowell.
There's also an new diner (I forget the name) on Water st in Augusta that serves really good breakfasts and lunches.

(8,976 posts)...and I've led friends and family members on motorcycle rides and photo safaris up the southern coast starting at the Nubble Light and up through Old Orchard Beach to the Cape Elizabeth (Portland Head) Light. Haven't found anyone yet not happy to be in these famous "calender picture" places...

or some other populated island communities like the Fox Islands (Vinalhaven, North Haven.)
For hikers or leaf peepers I suggest a trip through Grafton Notch.
For hikers, there's also the Bigelow Range.
For people headed to Bean's I suggest a side trip to Wolfe's Neck state park.

(2,091 posts)My second favorite place in Maine is Ogunquit and walking the Marginal Way to Perkins Cove for a lobster roll and chowder. But my very favorite place in Maine is our camp in the Belgrade Lakes (East Pond). Love listening to the loons at night. Since we retired, we live in Florida in the winter and Maine in the summer. We have the best of both worlds.
