The Republican seeks records on money scam in Holyoke city treasurer's office
HOLYOKE -- The Republican has filed a request under the Massachusetts public records law to obtain copies of communications that occurred regarding a money scam in the city treasurer's office.
City Treasurer Sandra A. Smith has been asked to provide:
"Any communications that you or any staff member in your office had with the Holyoke Police Department in June 2017 (or whatever date on which the Holyoke City treasurer's office notified the Holyoke Police Department about this incident) in which you or anyone on your staff informed police that a theft of money affecting the Holyoke city treasurer's office had occurred in the form of a scam by computer email. Please provide any and all forms in which this communication between the Holyoke city treasurer's office and the Holyoke Police Department took place: emails, text messages, phone records, etc, along with the date and time of day that such communications occurred."
Smith hasn't returned The Republican's messages seeking comment. But she told Western Mass News the amount she wired to what turned out to be a fake department head was $9,997 and when she realized she'd been duped, "I could have thrown up."
Smith also told Western Mass News she takes responsibility for the scam and it was an isolated breach.
