Detroit reports major drop in homicides in 2024, hitting lowest rate since 1969

(Detroit Free Press) Detroit saw a precipitous decline in the number of homicides and shootings in 2024 over the year before, continuing a trend of sliding violent crime since a pandemic-era spike, according to police data presented by city officials Friday.

The number of homicides fell to 203 last year, down from 252 in 2023 — a 19% decline to the lowest rate in more than 50 years. Nonfatal shootings saw a 25% year-over decline, down to 606 in 2024 from 804 the year prior.

Mayor Mike Duggan and interim police Chief Todd Bettison hailed the reduction as remarkable at an annual news conference, crediting the hiring of hundreds of additional police officers in recent years and greater reliance on community violence intervention (CVI) groups that attempt to prevent crime by providing support to those seen as more likely to commit it. ......................(more)

But, since he's not, I hope whomever is elected next continues his policies.

I pay very close attention to the news. I watch all the important channels: Fox, Newsmax, even the local ABC affiliate that's owned by Sinclair. You can tell just how horrible crime of every type is higher than it's ever been!!111!11!1

Don't forget NextDoor, it's a cesspool of people painting every neighborhood as crime ridden.

I have spent years on NextDoor battling the misperception that "crime is explodiing." Crime is historically low just about everywhere. The difference is people have Ring Cameras and there are sites like NextDoor for people to share porch pirates, car break ins, and other petty crime stories.

Crime spiked modestly under Trump, but went way down under Biden.

The economy is doing much better in Detroit, there is a lot going on there. People have jobs, there is hope, crime goes down when this happens.
