Hinds County seeing shortage of poll managers as presidential election approaches
JACKSON, Miss. — The Hinds County Election Commission started training poll managers Tuesday to staff precincts for the Nov. 5 presidential election. But with about two months to go before voters cast their ballots, the commission says it has a shortage of people to run the precincts.
“I think we have maybe about 75% of the amount of poll workers that we need,” according to Election Commission Chairwoman Shirley Varnado.
Hinds County has 107 precincts and Varnado said each precinct has to have at least five poll workers. Depending on the number of voters registered at a precinct, more may be needed on Election Day if there’s a high turnout.
As an example, Varnado said the town of Terry’s Precinct 2 “has almost 3,500 voters” and she said they will need “at least nine to 10 workers at that location.”
