Church leaves denomination, says United Methodists not 'accepting the authority of the scripture'

A Mississippi church has chosen to leave the United Methodist Church over conflicting views on homosexuality, abortion and the teaching of Islam.

The First United Methodist Church of Louisville decided to leave the denomination Sunday morning during a "membership affirmation," said the Rev. Mike Childs. The vote was 175-6 with one member abstaining.

Going forward, the church will be known as First Methodist Church of Louisville.

"While our church will no longer be a member of the United Methodist denomination, it will continue to be a Christ-centered church that is faithful to the Scriptures and the theology of (Methodism founder) John Wesley," Childs said. "It will forever be a Methodist church but not a United Methodist church."

I'm sure plenty of members will find other UMC groups to affiliate with. A southern church of course, with ultra conservative values.

The buildings, etc. are all owned by the conference, not the individual church. The property settlement mentioned could be fairly difficult, since taking a church out of UMC is not part of the rules. Unlike the many Baptist churches, the UMC is very much centrally organized.

This particular breakaway church will finally be the one that absolutely knows the unchanging (except when it does), merciful (except for all His killing), all-knowing (except when He doesn't) Word of God... just like every other church denomination out there.
