Laxalt defends actions in taped conversation; Dems not convinced
After weeks of back and forth between Legislative Democrats and the attorney general's office, Attorney General Adam Laxalt faced public questioning Wednesday evening centered on a recorded conversation with a top gaming regulator.
Laxalt defended his actions on a recorded conversation between himself and Gaming Control Board Chairman A.G. Burnett in front of a joint session between the Assembly Ways and Means and the Senate Finance committees. Democrats, however, weren't convinced a conflict of interest didn't exist while pushing for an Assembly bill to give the Gaming Control Board the option for independent counsel.
While the official reason for the Wednesday night hearing was Assembly Bill 513, which would give the Gaming Control Board the option for independent counsel, the bulk of the discussion focused on the leaked discussion between Laxalt and Burnett.
Burnett recorded a conversation he had with Laxalt in March 2016 after what Burnett described as concerns that the substance of the meeting could be improper. Laxalt asked if Burnett might file an amicus brief in a lawsuit involving the Las Vegas Sands Corp.
