Two hurt after driver, 91, slams into Santa Fe, NM, sandwich shop
In all the years that Mucho Gourmet Sandwich Shoppe has been in business in Santa Fe, the restaurant hasnt had a drive-thru.
That changed somewhat Tuesday morning when a 91-year-old driver not only crashed her vehicle into the eatery off Llano Street but drove all the way through it and into a vacant storefront next door.
A customer and an employee were taken to the hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening, police spokesman Greg Gurulé said. Mostly emotional trauma, he said in an email.
Gurulé said the crash happened when a driver accidentally put her car into drive instead of reverse and stepped on the gas, causing her vehicle to jump the curb and smash into the business in a commercial complex south of St. Michaels Drive. The vehicle proceeded through the business and into a vacant suite formerly occupied by Santa Fe Lock and Key, he wrote in the email.
The woman seemed coherent after the accident but was definitely shocked and embarrassed, Archuleta said. Once she was inside, she panicked more and then drove into the suite next door. Apparently, shes a regular, Archuleta added. The owners knew who she was. She knew them. It was kind of just like she came for lunch and drove through the business.
