Judges on New Mexico ballots

The New Mexico Judicial Performance Evaluation Commission was created in 1990 to make it easier for voters to make informed decisions at the ballot box.

"This Judicial Performance Evaluation Commission, in my experience, takes its job very seriously," KOAT Legal Expert John Day said. "It's a commission made up of lawyers and non-lawyers, people who come in contact with judges."

The commission aims to get a "comprehensive" picture of how judges perform by speaking with court staff, probation officers, law enforcement, and others -- then proceeds by issuing its recommendation online for voters.

This year, most of the 39 judges listed on the commission's website are classified as "retain," suggesting the commission has found the judges are sufficiently doing their job.

Combined with the Judicial Performance Evaluation Commission, it was easy to decide which judges to retain.
