UPDATE: my granddaughter just got in to the College of Charleston! She is going to accept!

She was also accepted into Eckerd but prefers C of C. She fell in love with the city and its food. We all might go down for Parent's Weekend in late September. What a blast that would be!

This is such good news for her. She was accepted two other places but this by far was her dream school. She's had a real struggle with ADHD and had to repeat a year. It was a difficult time. I think she will really blossom there. Her goal is to become a Marine Biologist and C of C has a great program. And being near the water is also good for her so I am hoping she'll do some sailing.

Today is a great day!

To struggle with ADHD and then repeat a year must have been very discouraging, but obviously she kept plugging away. You have good reason to be very proud of her.

Hope she realizes her dreams there.

If nothing else, she will really appreciate the opportunity she is getting to go to the school of her dreams. I am sure you will remind her often that she earned that spot because of her hard work.

Keep us posted on her progress.

9. I think it helped that she faced it straight on with her application.

She actually talked about her struggle with it, her failures as well as her successes. She didn't sugarcoat anything and she vigorously pursued it with the admissions office folks and that must have impressed them. I mean, at one point she even visited after she had applied to talk to the admissions office people. She was pretty up front about
her enthusiasm to go there.

School love students who are honest and tell it like it is. I work at a University and I can vouch for that. Some kids are so fake that you can not believe it. We have gotten to the point where we see right through that. Ever wonder why a straight "A" student with 4 leadership and other things and get turned down…..FAKINESS. You raised your children who raised your grandchildren right. You should be so proud. What a great Grandparent you are.

I am trying not to sugarcoat her problems here, even tho I am so heartfelt in my love for her, my first grandchild! It broke my heart when she got into such trouble with school and now I am so joyful for her success! For a while I didn't think she would EVER get the success she should have gotten...

I do hope she does some research and carefully picks the right major for her. Marine biology is fun, but it is not a high demand field. Just hope she goes in with eyes open.

Confederate sympathizer named college prez, students rebel

Source: MSNBC

The College of Charleston is tearing at the seams as outraged students and alumni protest the selection of its next president – a defender of the Confederacy with a history of championing the Rebel Flag.

The board of trustees’ selection of Republican Lt. Gov. Glenn McConnell, a Civil War re-enactor who for years led the fight to keep the Confederate flag hanging over South Carolina’s capital building, comes just two years after the college embarked on an ambitious campaign to attract more minority students.

Critics say McConnell’s appointment will tarnish the college’s reputation and hinder efforts to diversify the student body, which with just 6% black students has one of the lowest student diversity rates in the state.

Both the student government and faculty Senate have issued unanimous votes of no-confidence in the school’s board of trustees. The board has not budged, insisting it stands by McConnell’s selection.

Professor in beer can photo controversy lands new job

CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) -
The former Charleston Southern University professor who claimed his photo's appearance on a beer can design cost him his job says he accepted a job offer at College of Charleston.

Paul Roof said he has been hired as an adjunct professor with C-of-C's Department of Sociology and Anthropology.

Roof has declined a request for an interview about his new job, but he released a public statement on his Facebook page that read, "I am ready to move on the next adventure and I am excited about what the future has in store."

Roof, who has been an educator for 15 years, spent the last six at CSU, but said in May that university officials fired him over student reaction to his likeness appearing on a beer can.
